Small Town Business Ideas
79If you live in a small town then you are blessed or cursed depending on the way you look at it; but I personally think it is a blessing. You are living in the smallest niche market in the world. These are some of the best markets to either create a highly specialized product for local distribution or to create that “home made” and small town product for national or even international distribution.
Many larger companies even go as far as to relocate a division to a small town just to get that marketing appeal. If a multi-million dollar company will open shop in a small town on purpose, they must know what they are doing.
The Impact of Technology
Many of the most successful small town businesses are regional or seasonal, but that has been changing over the years with the impact of the Internet. Small town businesses are rapidly changing from wild berry jams and fishing lodges or resorts to very high tech website development companies and even a haven for some of the most talented writers and editorial contributors of our time.
This is an extreme example, but Microsoft is located in a small town at the lower west end of the road that leads to Issaquah, Washington and then eventually to Stevens Pass.
The Internet has changed the way we communicate and it has changed what the definition of a small town is and this has opened the door to an unlimited number of small town business ideas. People in a small town use the Internet to look bigger than they are and people in a big city are using the Internet to look small and personalized.

From Paintings to Tractor Parts
If
you have Internet connectivity (which most people do), then you are connected
to the world and you have the ability to do anything. I have seen successful
(and I mean very successful) small town businesses where the
owner is a painter and she is selling her paintings piece by piece online.
Another very successful person does not even live in a town, but instead just a
wide spot in the road in Idaho. He buys old 1930’s-1960’s vehicles and tractors
from ranchers and sells the reconditioned parts online. Because of the Internet, there are countless entrepreneur ideas to choose from.
Passion + Resources + Skills = Success!
The best way to create any type of small business whether you live in a small town or in the heart of New York or London is to first follow your passion and then look at your resources and skills.
When you combine the sum total of your passion, resources and skills and then you match them up against a true need then you have found the right small town business idea.
Happy hubbing,
Jordan

So true Jordan, I am from a small town and can definetly see how small opportunities have grown into a much broader playing field thanks to the internet.
I lived in a tiny town for nearly 20 years. Talk about a niche market! It is interesting how the internet is giving those small town businesses big city exposure! Good hub, Jordan!
Thank you Jordan. We live in a small town and find this to be very useful and helpful information
Very well written Jordan! I also live in a small town and without the internet I probably would have to go back to the big city :)

Great hub, Jordan. So true - The internet has changed not only how the world communicates, but it has also opened up a realm of possibilities for small businesses that were not possible many years ago.
I like this sentence: "People in a small town use the Internet to look bigger than they are and people in a big city are using the Internet to look small and personalized." :)
Thanks for sharing your insights.
